Emergency management is the discipline of avoiding risks. It is all about preparation for catastrophe prior to its happening. Much more can be said that it is a procedure by which all persons, groups and communities handle perils in an endeavor to shun impact of disaster resulting from perils. Emergency management requires appraisal of:
• Possible perils and risks
• Multi-tiered plan to prevent
• Mitigate
• Respond to
• Recover from incidents
• Emergencies
• Disasters
Here are some core programs to described in detail emergency management as under:
Peril Appraisal
This program plays significant role in avoiding such circumstances. Peril appraisal:
• Recognize most probable forms of naturally occurring and human caused (anthropogenic) perils at SLAC
• Assess probability of their occurrence
• Assess susceptibility in terms of peril effect on persons, property and environment
It is strongly recommended that peril appraisal must be updated once every three years to reflect alters in necessities or circumstances.
Planning
At all levels of emergency management programs, planning is the core. EPP (emergency preparedness plan) as a central manuscript portrays its strategy. Along with EPP other essential documents are:
• Emergency resource database (ERD)
• Emergency plan implementing procedures (EPIP)
• Facility emergency plans (FEPs)
• Continuity of operations plans (COOPs)
Reporting
Reporting is of great importance and essentially required for emergency management. All emergencies, spills, mishaps, fires and incidents are documented under this part.
Equipment
Emergency management manager is accountable for maintenance of supplies for:
• Heavy rescue trailer at PAFD Station 7
• Disaster supply cache at Building 249
• Medical triage trailer at building 250
• In emergency resources map, locations for emergency supply are indicated
Similarly, life safety box contains:
• The current FEP for the building
• A box cover sheet that graphically indicates the hazards in the building

SLAC Emergency Response Team
SERT affiliates are requisite to complete all training. They also require staying in accordance to retraining schedule.
